Planners in the State of Michigan are quickly moving to the forefront of progressive planning initiatives. In response to a statewide economic crisis, planners and municipal leaders are embracing place-making as a mechanism to achieve a future sustainable economy. As a faculty member at a Form-Based Codes Institute training this week, I was extremely impressed with the level of interest and sophistication of the attendees. Clearly, this is a group on a mission. Led by the Michigan Municipal League, the range and scope of efforts is unmatched at a statewide level in the Midwest, if not the entire country. I applaud their efforts to bring the issues of urbanism to the forefront, and to educate their members on the latest techniques to ensure sustainable, quality places.
